WHO: The most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies is by eliminating rabies thru vaccination!

Taiwan has not had a case of animal rabies since 1961, but COA has confirmed 3 cases of rabies in wild Formosan ferret-badgers, putting Taiwan back on the list of countries with the virus. We urge Taiwan government to follow WHO guideline on rabies prevention. "Rabies is a vaccine-preventable disease. The most cost-effective strategy for preventing rabies in people is by eliminating rabies in dogs thru vaccination."
In 2010, Bali killed 200,000 dogs but it didn't halt rabies until a mass vaccination. Therefore, we strongly urge Taiwan government to follow WHO guideline on rabies prevention. "Preventing human rabies thru control of domestic dog rabies is a realistic goal for large parts of Africa and Asia, and is justified financially by the future savings of discontinuing post-exposure prophylaxis for people".
